St.Vincent &
The
Grenadines

Photography: © Dennis SaboSt. Vincent and the Grenadines joined
the IWC in 1981 and voted in favour of the moratorium on
commercial whaling in 1982. Its proposal to classify Bequian
whaling as aboriginal subsistence whaling was approved by
the IWC shortly after, and a quota of up to four humpback
whales each year is currently allowed with the meat and products
used exclusively for local consumption. This subsistence
whaling quota is due for renewal at the 2007 meeting of the
IWC.
Since the late 1980s, the votes of St. Vincent and the Grenadines
have generally followed the same pattern as Japan and other
pro-whaling countries. However since 2004, unlike other Eastern
Caribbean states, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has abstained
on votes to establish new sanctuaries and also abstained
on Japan’s repeated proposals to abolish the Southern
Ocean Sanctuary. Since 1992, 23 out of 140 votes cast by
both countries have been different; with the vast majority
of these being abstentions by St. Vincent and the Grenadines
rather than votes opposing Japan’s position.
TAKE ACTION
Urge the Prime Minister and other government representatives of St. Vincent and
the Grenadines to oppose commercial whaling at the forthcoming IWC meeting.
