About
Caribbean Whale Friends is dedicated to bringing together individuals
and organizations throughout the Caribbean to promote whale conservation
and to oppose whale killing, which the Japanese government continues
to try to garner support for in our region.
The global community
sent a strong message to the Japanese government at the 2007
meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) – overwhelmingly
voting against its pro-whaling proposals that attempted to lift
the global whaling ban put into effect in 1986.
Yet despite
this, some Caribbean government officials are supporting Japan’s
whaling plan, which targets seven protected whale species: southern
and northern minke whales, sperm whales, sei whales, Bryde’s
whale, fin whales, and starting in 2007 the majestic humpback
whale has been added to this list.
In fact, these Caribbean
officials have continually voted for Japan’s whaling proposals
at IWC meetings on behalf of our governments of Antigua and Barbuda,
Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent
and the Grenadines – and have even gone so far as to say
that the people of the Caribbean support this.
We do not!
Through this site, we hope to bring together all of us – individuals,
organizations, and businesses – to stand strong against
Japan’s push for Caribbean support of its whaling campaign,
and instead to call for whale conservation in our region.
